Novembeard for Sanel's Project
During the month of November, Whitney M. Young Magnet HS students, staff, and community members will be raising money for Sanel's Project by growing beards. Each whiskery participant will seek sponsors to raise money for a great cause. On December 1st and 2nd, the Whitney Young community will vote for their favorite beard in Blue House. Each vote will raise an additional 25¢ for Sanel's Project.

Who is Sanel?
Sanel Mehmedovic was
anything but the average or typical high school boy. Aside from his obvious
physical differences which confined him to a motorized wheel chair, he was not
like other kids. Emotionally and intellectually, Sanel was special and unique.
Wonderful and kind. Thoughtful and generous.
He was one student who I often
would go and see and say hello to on a regular basis throughout his time at WY.
He was a fantastical dreamer and was one who turned his dreams into reality. He
built gardens, comforted others, and created Sanel's Project; an organization
that created plant terrariums that would remain alive (unlike flowers) and be
given to people staying in hospitals to provide them with kindness, hope, love,
and a smile. Sadly, the first plant to ever be given out from the project went
to Sanel at his last stay in the hospital. But through the Sanel Project, his
story and conviction to helping others in the most genuine and kind way lives
on.

Sanel can tell you about the project in his words in a video
he shot last year for Whitney Young's TV station, DubTV. His clip is at 6:20:
